CIRCUMFERENTIAL PISTON PUMPS
The ‘Can Do’, Time-Tested, Proven Hygienic Pump
It is rare to find a hygienic manufacturing plant that does not use circumferential piston pumps. The external circumferential piston pump was established back in the 1950s and remains a leading positive displacement pump type to this day.
Renowned for efficient and careful handling of low to high viscosity fluids, CPPs can transfer fragile slurries as well as soft or hard solids and all with a steady, smooth output flow.

How do Circumferential Piston Pumps Work?
The below video shows the working principle of the circumferential piston pump.
Circumferential Piston Pump Operation
A pair of winged rotors (the ‘pistons’) rotate around the circumference of machined chambers within the pump housing. This results in a large sealing surface which minimises slip, offers low-shear, gentle-handling and highly accurate pumping.
As the pump rotary motion engages, the rotors mesh and unmesh to cause a partial vacuum at the suction port and generate pressure at the discharge or outlet port. Pump output is directly proportional to speed and the direction of flow is reversible.
Deep Channels
The deep channels, in which the rotors travel, provide large voids to gently transfer fluids while minimising shear and bruising or damage to entrained particles and soft or hard solids.
Suction
The rotor wings (pistons) rotate around the circumference of the channel in the pump casing. This continuously generates a partial vacuum at the suction port as the rotors unmesh, causing fluid to enter the pump.
Discharge
The fluid is transported around the channel by the rotor wings & is displaced as the rotor wings re-mesh, generating pressure at the discharge port. Pump output is directly proportional to speed & direction of flow is reversible.
What do Circumferential Piston Pumps Offer that Rotary Lobe Pumps do not?
Hygienic lobe pumps use stainless-steel rotors within a stainless-steel pump head with sufficient clearance to prevent contact.
Circumferential piston pumps, however, use non-galling, non-seizing 808 alloy rotors with ultra-close clearance to the stainless-steel pump head and this important feature results in the following advantages:
1
HIGH EFFICIENCY
Circumferential piston pumps use alloy rotors in close clearance to the stainless-steel pump head to result in minimal slip and high efficiency on a wide range of viscosities.
2
GENTLE
Low shear and gentle handling of fluids and solids. It is possible to see less than 5% change to product across the pump. No product ingress between rotor face and rotorcase.
3
SELF PRIMING
Those tight alloy 808 rotor clearances result in a partial vacuum at suction port so the CPP can self-prime and even suction-lift vertically up and out of drums and other containers.
4
METERING
Sometimes called ‘External Circumferential Piston’ pumps, CPPs are similar in operation to external gear pumps and similarly can be used as very accurate metering or dosing pumps.
Circumferential Piston Pump Models
Cirumferential piston pumps have been used in hygienic and industrial applications since the 1950s. These heavy-duty, rotary positive displacement pumps offer proven and reliable shear-sensitive transfer of high viscosity fluids and slurries.
The pump ranges below are all dimensionally interchangeable with Waukesha Cherry-Burrell® Universal pumps on a model-for-model basis e.g. 0600TRA10 replaces 060U1, 0600TRA20 replaces 060U2 and R0600P replaces both 060U1 & 060U2.
Below are the various ranges available from BestPump:
REVOLUTION
The world’s first true Clean-In-Place (CIP) hybrid circumferential piston and lobe pump. Outstanding hygienic design.
TRA10
The ubiquitous workhorse pump recognised globally for handling high viscosity fluids with ease.
TRA20
A variation on the TRA10 pump but engineered for high-hygiene applications, higher pressures and option for CIP design.
SPARE PARTS
Spare parts and expert repair services are available from BestPump for these models and their Waukesha® pump equivalents.
Revolution – the ‘Hybrid’ Pump
SAME FOOTPRINT AS TRA10 & TRA20 PUMPS
SAME FOOTPRINT AS WAUKESHA® U1 & U2 PUMPS
The Revolution takes the decades-old, proven design of the circumferential piston pump and delivers an outstanding re-engineered pump technology that is designed for today’s production demands and those of the future.
With improvements in hygiene, cleanliness, maintenance, versatility, product yield, energy consumption and price, existing Waukesha® and TRA users can drop-in the equivalent Revolution model with no major engineering required.
Amazingly, all these features & benefits fit inside the same external footprint as legacy pumps and come at an even more competitive price.
When you need multiple pumps for varying applications, the Revolution hybrid design means that the pumps can be deployed as either a circumferential piston or rotary lobe pump and with common spare parts. This allows lower spare parts holding and common pumps across your production plants.
1½-inch to 8-inch models available with flow rates from 2.6m³ to 190m³ per hour. Maximum pressure to 31-bar / 450-psi and maximum temperature of 150°C / 300°F.
TRA10 Pump Series
STRIP-CLEAN CIRCUMFERENTIAL PISTON PUMP
SAME FOOTPRINT AS WAUKESHA® U1 & U2 PUMPS
PARTS INTERCHANGEABLE WITH WAUKESHA® U1 PUMPS
The heavy-duty Wright Flow Technologies traditional ‘workhorse’ pump designed to be easily strip-cleaned (clean out of place).
Featuring time-tested, proven design with exceptional engineering and manufacturing quality, the TRA10 pump series is a versatile and reliable choice for all hygienic and industrial manufacturers.
Existing users of Waukesha Cherry-Burrell® Universal I series pumps can take advantage of the TRA10 pumps and parts 100% interchangeability.
1-inch to 6-inch models available with flow rates from 1.3m³ to 102m³ per hour. Maximum pressure to 27-bar / 400-psi and maximum temperature of 150°C / 300°F.
TRA20 Pump Series
SAME FOOTPRINT AS WAUKESHA® U1 & U2 PUMPS
PARTS INTERCHANGEABLE WITH WAUKESHA® U2 PUMPS
The TRA20 pump series builds upon the robust features of the TRA10 and is designed for high-hygiene applications. An extra layer of hygiene is offered by o-ring sealed rotors and rotor retainers plus hygienic hex nut rotor retainers.
Further enhancements include an optional Clean-In-Place CIP design with internal porting to allow vigorous flushing through all internal chambers plus the TRA20 series pumps also allow higher pressure capabilities than the TRA10 series.
1-inch to 6-inch models available with flow rates from 1.8m³ to 102m³ per hour. Maximum pressure to 34-bar / 500-psi and maximum temperature of 150°C / 300°F.
Wright TRA Pump Spare Parts
(suitable for Waukesha® Universal I & II Series pumps)
If the Wright TRA10 & TRA20 and Waukesha® U1 & U2 pumps are interchangeable, does that mean that their internal parts are identical? Yes!
BestPump supplies both Wright Flow Technologies clients and Waukesha Cherry-Burrell® Universal series pump users with genuine Wright Flow Technologies parts and kits with same or tighter tolerances.
With years of Waukesha® knowledge & experience coupled with our longstanding Wright Flow Technologies heritage, BestPump can expertly replace, repair and service your circumferential piston pumps.
